Richmond Bird-wing Butterfly Vine

Pararistolochia laheyana
Plant Type
Vine
Habitat
Warm subtropical rainforest, Cool subtropical rainforest
Conservation Status
Locally significant

The endangered Richmond Birdwing Butterfly chooses only two closely related vines (of the same Genus) on which to lay its eggs, this being of the two. Luckily for us, this vine grows near the entrance to the walk! Unfortunataly, a closely related exotic vine (Dutchman's Pipe) which is found throughout the hinterland, if found by the butterfly, will trick the female into laying eggs; however, the leaves on the exotic plant are toxic to the emerging caterpillar.
