Springbrook is the northern limit for this iconic species, which represents a Gondwanan relic. Usually seen with strong tall trunks in southern forests, the old, gnarled trees seen at Springbrook can be thousands of years old! They are often seen with a 'ring' of younger stems growing from an older, original tree. If you look carefully at what looks like a solid mass of trunk at ground level, this is in part where the soil has eroded away over many years, exposing the once submerged original root mass.
